My day started off with a little stint on a local radio show and thank goodness I did, because a lot of my audience tonight said the had heard my three minutes. Marketing really is everything, maybe I should offer a joke with every flyer I hand out lol!
Come showtime, I felt like my seven years of famine just might be coming to an end. I decided to treat this show like it my last one ever.
Tonight felt like an excellent performance night, such rhythm between the audience and I, like we had actually planned this get together. I could be louder, more energetic and play, because I had a room to play with. I reworked some gags and realised it was like trying to even out two sides of a bob – just leave it alone or you’ll end up bald lol! I milked some, and got the desired result. I even had one of those magic moments where you walk the audience to a gag and let them hit the punchline themselves. It was hilarious, for all involved. In fact, a lady genuinely killed me onstage. A laugh escaped, and as she tried to arrest it, it’s entire gang burst through and she couldn’t stop. She was laughing so hard in spite of herself, and I begged her to continue, to stop fighting it, to free herself from the binds of decorum – yup, we had a good time.
I remained so conscious of not just spewing material at them, because I have learnt that I am actually likeable (hahaha) so I try to implement the skills I learnt from performing to my tiny tea parties. Speak to them, not at them. It actually leads to nuances in your gags that get lost in just ‘reporting’ a joke. I even enjoyed some quiet moments of them just listening. And of a joke falling flat lol, but hey, I had to give it a go. Delivery is everything hey.
Now I shall continue to hustle for audiences and keep going back to the drawing board with this set. This has, in many ways, begun my journey towards my next one man show, Barefoot and Pregnant. I kid you not 😀
